Venous Ulcers

Venous Ulcers are open sores that develop on the lower legs due to poor blood circulation. They occur when the valves in the veins (which prevent blood from flowing backwards) become damaged or incompetent.
Causes:
Chronic venous insufficiency (weak or damaged leg veins)
- Chronic venous insufficiency, CVI, (weak or damaged leg veins)
- Varicose veins
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Obesity
- Prolonged standing or sitting
- Skin injuries
Symptoms:
- Open sore on the lower leg, often above the ankle
- Pain, swelling, and redness
- Itching and discharge
- Skin discoloration (brown or yellow)
Diagnosis:
Physical examination and Doppler ultrasound to assess blood flow.
Treatment:
- Compression stockings to improve blood flow
- Wound dressings to protect the sore and promote healing
- Medications to reduce inflammation and infection
- Surgery to repair or remove damaged veins
Complications: Infection, Skin breakdown, and Leg loss (in severe cases).
Prevention:
- Exercise regularly
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Avoid prolonged sitting or standing
- Wear compression stockings if you have chronic venous insufficiency
- Treat varicose veins promptly
