Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a condition in which the veins in the legs do not function properly, impairing blood flow back to the heart. This can result in a range of symptoms and complications, including swelling, varicose veins, skin changes, and leg discomfort. Because CVI can lead to serious health issues if left untreated, a professional medical consultation is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.

Common Symptoms:

  • Swelling (especially in the lower legs and ankles)
  • Varicose veins
  • Aching, heaviness, or a feeling of tiredness in the legs
  • Skin changes:
    • Discoloration (brownish or reddish skin)
    • Thickening or hardening (lipodermatosclerosis)
    • Itching or ulcer formation (venous stasis ulcers)
  • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
  • Painful leg cramps, often at night

Causes & Risk Factors:

  • Weakened or damaged vein valves
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Prolonged sitting or standing
  • Genetic predisposition (family history)
  • Effect of gravity, especially without movement (causes blood pooling)
